Are you craving at-sea adventure? For the yachtsmen looking to head out beyond the horizon-maybe even crossing oceans-the Marlow Explorer 72E is a serious long-range cruiser with bluewater pedigree. Nearly a decade ago, we reported on a couple who took their 72E on the cruise of a lifetime, showcasing why the 72E is the perfect yacht for those looking to cruise the world.
“Thomas and Jutta Kittel had a dream of cruising where few have had a chance to go. They boarded their Marlow Explorer 72E, Azura, on May 1, 2014, in Rostock, Germany, and cruised the Baltic Sea along the coasts of Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to St. Petersburg in Russia. They then entered the Russian inland waterways and voyaged to Moscow and back to St. Petersburg, spending more than seven weeks within Russia… In 4½ months, they spent 135 days on the water and covered 4,150 nautical miles.”
Whether you’re conversing with the captain underway or enjoying elevated alfresco dining at anchor, the skylounge is the go-to spot. Courtesy United Yacht SalesSomeday Came is a 2006 Marlow Explorer 72E that was originally designed and built for David Marlow, founder and owner of Marlow Yachts. It is currently listed with United Yacht Sales for $2.4 million. The 72-foot, long-range cruiser has a three-stateroom, three-head layout and comfortable homelike amenities.
The Marlow 72E is powered by twin 1,015 hp Caterpillar C18 diesels, which push this vessel to a reported 22-knot top speed. The diesels have 3,100 hours on. them. At an 18-knot cruise speed, the 72E can run nonstop for 700 nautical miles. Reducing speed to 9 knots will give the 72E a 3,000-plus-nautical-mile range. It’s worth noting both engines had 1,000-hour servicing completed in November 2023.
Someday Came has a traditional and warm interior, aided by sole-to-ceiling teak finishes throughout and natural light from nearly 360 degrees of windows. Its two-tiered main deck has the salon aft, and up three steps and forward is an open country galley.
Notice how the low-back sofas are positioned to help maximize views out of the windows running the length of the salon. A built-in wine cooler forward and to port means having the right bottle for any occasion at the ready.
Meal-prep amenities here include U-shaped granite countertops, provision stowage for long-range voyaging and a dedicated coffee space. Galley appliances include:
Accommodations belowdecks include three staterooms and a bonus berth, sleeping up to seven people. There’s also a crew quarters with room for two. The full-beam (20’2″) amidships master stateroom has an island king berth, a drop-down flat-screen TV, cedar-lined stowage and a granite-sole his-and-hers en suite head with an adjoining shower. The forepeak en suite VIP stateroom also has a king berth, built-in stowage and a flat-screen TV. The guest stateroom has side-by-side berths with built-in stowage, a flat-screen TV and an en suite head.
The flybridge has two sections, an enclosed skylounge forward and an open after section. While the after section does have a pop-up flat-screen TV, refrigerator, grill station and wet bar, most of the space is open, offering a blank slate for owners to arrange to meet their needs. If it gets too warm, a custom sun shade can extend from the sky lounge hardtop to poles in the corners aft. Inside, two L-shaped dinettes are abaft the two-seat helm station.
