EmBARKing on a dog-friendly luxury yacht charter

Chartering a yacht with your family is a common experience, but for many, “family” includes their four-legged companions. However, traveling with pets requires more than simply finding a yacht that accepts them; there are practical, legal, and health considerations to keep in mind. Here’s what you need to know before taking your furry friend on a luxury yacht charter.

Dog Friendly yacht charters

Historically, dogs haven’t been popular on yachts due to concerns over damage to decking and furnishings from sharp claws, teeth, and unwanted odours. However, today, some yachts are more pet-friendly, though it may still be challenging to charter with a dog. It’s crucial to communicate clearly with your charter broker to ensure you understand the yacht’s rules and the legal requirements at all your ports of call. Expect to pay a substantial security deposit or provide references from previous trips.

Legal and Health Requirements
Different countries have varying laws for animals to prevent the spread of diseases. Most require dogs to be microchipped, vaccinated, and have supporting health documentation. In the European Mediterranean, the pet passport scheme mandates up-to-date rabies vaccines, with initial doses needed months in advance. In the Caribbean, pet permits are required, with additional veterinary checks needed in the British Virgin Islands. For entry into the U.S., proof of a rabies vaccine is necessary, and in Australia and New Zealand, pets will be quarantined, making short charters impractical. You’ll also need to plan your pet’s transportation to the yacht. International flights often require animals to travel in the cargo hold and the alternative of a private jet being costly.

Safety on board

Onboard Well-being and Safety
While you may dream of a relaxing week on a luxury yacht, your dog may find it stressful. Motion sickness, overheating in the sun, or uncomfortable conditions could cause distress. Dogs are more prone to heat exhaustion than humans, and hot decks or sand can burn their paws. Local laws regarding where dogs are welcome should also be considered. The crew will not be responsible for looking after your pet while you explore local attractions. Use apps like AllTrails to scope out dog-friendly walks in the areas you are visiting so you can enjoy your time together without any worry.

Even well-trained dogs might have toilet accidents in unfamiliar surroundings so consider bringing puppy pads or a portable dog potty. Also, ensure your dog is safe on the yacht; they might try to jump overboard, and deep water makes rescues difficult. Lifejackets for dogs are an option, but make sure you practice with them in advance as they might be uncomfortable.

Choosing the Right Yacht
Not all yachts are suitable for pets, but your broker can help identify yachts that allow dogs. You’ll need prior approval, and certain conditions will be outlined in your contract. Smaller, calmer dogs are preferred, and you must be responsible for your pet’s needs while on board, including feeding, exercising, and toileting. Some yachts have very limited storage for provisions, so think about where their food can be stored – or you might want to treat them to raw food which will need refrigeration.
