Avikus’ Neuboat Control is a smart autopilot and joystick controller that integrates with a yacht’s throttle and steering controls. It provides AI-assisted collision prevention, route following, maneuver execution—including docking—and automotive-style adaptive cruise control functions. Neuboat Control uses lidar sensors to measure distance, and six fish-eye cameras to create 360-degree video streams. Its AI identifies and classifies objects.
Sangwon Shin, Avikus’ vice president, says building the tech included creating animated, 3D virtual views around the boat using cameras. Next, the system needed compatibility with displays and integration with engine controllers. Field-testing included training the system to maneuver a vessel in wind, tide and current. The solutions required logging thousands of hours aboard test boats, and continually focusing on engineering and AI development.
Always on WatchNeuboat Control mandates that human operators are actively engaged via user-interface pop-up boxes. If the human fails to click a button when prompted, then Neuboat Control slows—and eventually stops—the boat until its user reengages. The system commands rudders and engines, and it can also leverage joystick-controlled bow and stern thrusters.
