Mercury Racing 500R Outboard

I tested the Godfrey Sanpan 2700 powered by twin Mercury Racing 500R outboards. As the tachs climbed to 6,700 rpm, the speed rocketed to over 72 mph. I howled across the lake at over 100 feet per second—covering one football field every 3 seconds!

What’s the deal with these engines besides speed? Are they right for you? Consider the following points.

Decade of Development

While the 500R is the baddest hombre at Mercury Racing, it’s not the biggest Mother Mercury offers; that crown goes to the 600 hp V-12 (which is not in the Mercury Racing outboard stable). The 600 is aimed at larger cruisers and multi-engine installations. While the 500R can do the same duty, it also extends the envelope to include medium- to ultra-high-performance applications.

Mercury Racing offers multiple gear case profiles and different gear ratios, as well as a slew of high-performance propellers for the 500R. All these choices, though expensive, ultimately provide the best combination of engine, mounting system, shaft length, gear-case profile, gear ratio and propeller for specific applications. It’s what Merc Racing has always done best—better than any other outboard manufacturer.

Jeff Broman, Mercury Racing’s director, has spent 26 years at Mercury and he’s been intimately involved with the current V-6/V-8 platform, which began development in 2013. In 2016, the first Racing version of the V-8 platform was introduced as the vaunted 300R. The supercharged 450R followed in 2019, and today’s 500R launched in 2023.

“The 500R incorporates the latest developments at Mercury Racing for high-performance outboards, including a host of powerhead, midsection and gear case improvements aimed specifically at high-speed, high-performance boaters,” Broman says.

What makes the 500R so potent begins with the same 4.6-liter supercharged V-8 powerhead as the 450R, with 50 more horses and 10 percent more torque. That extra oomph comes from a new crankshaft, more robust main bearings and larger 1-inch driveshaft splines along with enhanced pistons, connecting rods and rod bearings for better high-rpm durability. The flywheel is a low-inertia design for quicker throttle response and less stress on the crankshaft at higher rpm. Also, the 500R employs 26 percent higher supercharger boost from a new air attenuator with larger intake tract, a 15 percent larger throttle body, and optimized supercharger inlet shape.  Finally, there’s a higher-efficiency charge air cooler.

The 500R boasts strengthened electro-hydraulic steering and the Advanced Racing Core (ARC) midsection, an exclusive to the 500R. It is the strongest and most durable midsection ever offered by Merc Racing. It features 7-hole adjustable transom brackets for twice the vertical adjustment range. The enhanced trim system features booster rams for greater trim authority. Stiffer engine mounts yield better steering and offshore ride capability. Precision-fitted heavy-duty guide plates keep the swivel bracket locked in place.  It’s available in 20-, 25-, 30- and even 35-inch shaft lengths.

The 500R’s gear case is available as R-Drive (submerged props; under 100 mph) and R-Drive Sport (surfacing props; applications over 100 mph). These two models are designed to enhance speed and power. Highlights include a 5.9-inch-diameter torpedo,  1-inch-diameter driveshaft, and 1.25-inch-diameter propshaft. Both accept props up to 17 inches in diameter. Both feature an intermediate spray plate and low-water pickups. A 1.60:1 gear ratio spins high-pitch, high-rake props at high rpm while retaining the low-end punch to quickly get heavy loads on plane.

One last tech note: The 500R employs a special humidity level of the engine’s intake air to permit the engine’s specially calibrated ECM to adjust spark timing to maintain the most aggressive yet efficient air/fuel calibration. This is an industry first on an outboard engine, and adds up to 30 hp more than would normally be available without humidity compensation.

As to durability, the 500R carries a three-year limited factory warranty. While it does check in at a big-boy 720 pounds (20-inch shaft), remember that it produces 500 horses! The old standards of 400 to 450 pounds from the two-stroke high-performance engines of yesteryear simply don’t apply here.

So, who’s a candidate for one or more 500Rs? I tested it in both single and multiple applications on a boat as “small” as a 22-foot Bass Cat Jaguar to dual-engine tri-toons such as the Sanpan 2700 to 40-foot multi-engine hotrod offshore center-consoles. The 500R proves to be at home in all these applications, and it delivers exactly the thrills performance boaters want, including the ability to put a big smile on your face while at the same time commanding your attention and respect. This is most evident in single-engine rigs such as the Bass Cat, where fighter-pilot skills and laser-focus attention are absolute necessities when at the helm of these 100-plus-mph machines. You’ll need driving skills and experience, and a boat able to handle 500-plus ponies and 720-plus pounds on the transom.Lastly, there’s the price: The 500R ranges from $72,00 to $84,500 depending on shaft length, gear case configuration, and color. If you’re in that category of boaters, perhaps it’s time to step up.
